My favorite artists of all time are the ones who have made their art accessible to everyone and made their art accessible everywhere—not just the internet.
That’s the art I see on the internet today. It’s a whole lot more than just the internet.
I don’t say that because I want our culture to be different. Because it’s true. But that’s also a lot more than just just the internet.
So, in addition to the internet, what is your favorite digital format to draw?
Well, I like digital all right, but it can be a double edged sword because if digital only becomes the best version of anything, then you’ve lost a lot of the artistic freedom we all enjoy. With digital, there are a lot of limitations, but because people can do things on digital so easily you can also do things that you never could on paper.
A lot of artists today just use Photoshop as their model of choice. But a lot of those artists are not drawing digital. People like Jim Steranko are drawing digital right now.
Jim Steranko is a great example—he does all his own digital work, he does very, very minimal digital work, so it’s very hard to do something that doesn’t feel digital. But he was a longtime pro of paper, when I started working with him. So my only critique is that when people are doing everything digitally, there are a lot of limitations on how you can draw.
I think a lot of artists are drawn to the simplicity of paper. It’s a tactile medium. You can do it in a way that’s pretty satisfying and not really digital at the same time.
It’s easy to do and so hard to do. In this digital age, people really have to think about how you’re working, what’s the most practical way to draw something and what’s most expressive and not digital-y.
And you just can’t always do it with a pencil. There’s a kind of beauty to working with an analogue pen and ink, but you have to be able to put in some effort in making it your digital art. If you use the pencil for a long period of time it’ll have an ugly, weird shading effect and you won’t make a good digital art.
The best digital art I make feels like it’s not so much about the digital experience but more about a collaboration with you fellow digital artist about what will connect us as artists.
