To illustrate, let’s imagine that a company called Ford, located in Pittsburgh, made a product called the “F-150.” That’s a big truck, with a massive grille that was supposed to be the focal point of a television ad to sell the truck to everyone.

You have three choices when it comes to how you would go about doing this job: you could draw a Ford logo of a Ford truck, or you could draw an icon for a Ford brand. The icon can be based on any icon associated with Ford, as long as it is distinctive and visually identifiable. For this example, let’s say that the icon is in a font that would look pretty good in a television ad; the font would be large enough to differentiate from the other graphics on screen, and it could be easily readable on small screens. (If you’re curious, the font on a standard HDTV screen is a 12-point font — which could be easily readable on a mobile device with a low-quality screen.)

It’s important to note that this is a guideline, not a rule. It’s not legal for one company to market a product that looks just like the logos of another company, such as two different logos in a row. While it might be a better way to draw a Ford truck than a logo, this is a guideline only, not a law.

In order to make this work, you need to do a couple more things. First of all, you need to have a lot of information to work with. Make sure to check out the F-150 website, and that they have a whole bunch of different images and illustrations of the product. (Although, honestly, sometimes you need to go even further than the website and do a lot of research!) Secondly, you need to be precise. The best way to do that is to check out the actual product for yourself — you cannot afford to be off by a bit. (And let’s be honest, if you see something that is very bad, there is a good chance that you might have done something wrong.)

Here’s an example. For your Ford logo, you could make two or three simple, recognizable images.

The first image should look somewhat “typical” and could be used to tell the viewer about the brand. If you are feeling confident about the first image, try drawing it out as an illustration, perhaps as a series of illustrations, or even as a large image.
