An international team of investigators from the University of Pennsylvania, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has just published an important announcement in Scientific Reports (doi.org/5gXmS).
The paper discusses the discovery of a new and powerful type of DNA repair enzyme, Dnmt3, which is able to repair DNA damage caused by heat exposure, stress and UV radiation in a manner analogous to a nuclear protein. While this mechanism of DNA repair may not make DNA repair a ‘magic healing’ device like a blood-based cell-surgical agent or a cellular ‘bio-pump’ for dealing with cancer or viral diseases, it does seem like a natural fit to the emerging data that DNA damage can be caused by various external sources. The team, led by Xiaoyu Li, has discovered Dnmt3 has some peculiar properties, including that it uses water as energy source. Dnmt3 has been used to help repair damage caused by radiation and stress in the lab, but this finding is particularly interesting as it suggests the ability to harness this natural mechanism in repairing DNA.
