We don’t know and we won’t know for a while.
As the “war on drugs” has raged in the U.S. for over a decade, the cost has skyrocketed — with an additional $100 billion spent each year — and in the United States alone it has cost the country $60 trillion since its inception — and counting.
And yet, the criminal justice system’s “tough on crime” approach to policing remains an inescapable, bipartisan, and inescapable fact of U.S. political culture. The cost of enforcing a system built on mass incarceration and other anti-poor policy outcomes has been more than $300 billion for the past 12 years — all of it going into the pockets and pockets of Wall Street.
That should tell you all you need to know about the current system being erected by the “pro-growth” Republicans who have taken over the White House and the Democratic Party. To those who have been advocating for change in the criminal justice system for a decade, that’s no surprise.
But to those who’ve spent the majority of their political careers defending the status quo, especially Republicans in Congress, the shocking revelation is all too familiar.
“The system has never been in such dire need of change,” said former Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell in an interview this week for a PBS Special report, “A Nation at War.”
“This is not an issue about racism, it’s not an issue about inequality,” Powell said.
