The last time I posted on the topic of the effects of time on the human brain, I mentioned that the timing and magnitude of the effects were likely to differ from person to person. Some people would show changes in their EEG during sleep that would, in effect, be equivalent to a waking state. This may be caused by subtle changes that may be difficult to detect. Others would, on the other hand, appear to be awake during any phase of the sleep cycle.

An example that comes to mind: imagine lying down and, instead of thinking about falling asleep, try and visualize falling into your dreams, a dream that you have always dreamed of in one form or another before. The idea of falling asleep, of course, is very appealing. But, in reality, falling asleep was never a goal for you. You might, for example, have tried to fall asleep, but the urge to fall asleep was too strong. This is, in fact, a classic form of a hypnagogic state, a state of vivid dreaming which, according to the American Psychological Association is a precursor of unconscious dreaming.

We can test this with fMRI brain scans.

The idea that sleepiness increases in relation to distance from the brain centre that produces the hypnagogic states is, of course, not controversial. The idea that sleepiness increases in relation to the temporal pattern of neuronal firing, that is, an increase, e.g. in the number of spindle cells, is relatively uncontroversial (Pamela Rizzolatti, et cetera, 2009).

So, as we start to investigate whether sleepiness is influenced by time-of-day or by other factors such as time-of-day
