I can see your points, but I think they are just being self-serving. Pole dancing comes to the rescue, by taking you places you never thought you could reach. At the same time, it seems like the “lazy” thing to do. In an ideal world, there would be something more to it than just pole dancing.
What are some ways the Pole Dance community is changing the world?
The pole dance community in the U.S. is incredibly diverse, with dancers from all walks of life.
There are performers, dancers, choreographers, and performers, many of them with very different styles. There are some amazing talent in the US, but it is often not well received in Canada or Europe. There are dancers in the US doing incredible things, but there are very few Canadian dancing traditions. When I was a student at the U of T, an incredible thing happened to me. A friend of mine, a woman in her twenties, had moved from Canada to the U.S., and she was going to teach a dance to the students in our school who were already interested in pole dancing. I asked her permission to go to the U.S. to participate. After three months there, she came back to Canada and started teaching in Canada too. The Canadian pole dancing community had been growing, but our U of T student program was small, so her involvement brought a lot of new people in.
This is what happens when you make an investment in the communities. At the U of T , student-faculty connections are just as important as student partnerships. There is a whole group of students now who come from all over the country to live in Toronto, Quebec or Manitoba, learning about community, connecting with local performers and making great friends.
What has the Pole Dance community done to influence politics in Canada or internationally?
I started studying the art of pole dancing in the 1980s. I had been watching and reading about dancing in the United States for 20 years. I was shocked to see how similar it was to the style of dancing that was being practiced in Toronto at the beginning of the century. At the same time, in America, the political climate became very dangerous before the end of the 20th century. There were massive social upheaval and social upheaval of all kinds. We saw these movements of the poor, working class and working class women. The end of slavery in America also changed things.
