The owner had told him what to do. They sat down and talked. “My name is Agent Smith,” says the bald kid. “I’m a private detective and I’ve been hired by this guy” (sic). All I know is I looked for a computer.” He turned to the white-haired, blue-eyed, very short man on the other side of the desk, and his face twisted dangerously. “What the fuck is your problem?” he muttered, and then he looked up and met my gaze: “What I’ve found in one hundred-and-thirty-five cases is that the problem is you – a black man, probably a drug addict – and you’re trying to make money or you need to get off or you’ve got some sort of personal problem.” Smith stopped talking for a beat, and we all waited. The young man put out his hand, and Smith placed it on his shoulder. “What are you looking for?” he said. “What do I need a computer for?
