It’s not as easy as you might think.

As I noted in that tweet, all but three members of my team on Friday made attempts to “read” my mind, but only one of them successfully succeeded (I was the only one to get a hit on their ability). Then, as is often the case, there were others who tried and failed and some who succeeded, but all but the last two of us got a hit, which is a huge distinction for any comic book character, let alone an ordinary guy with a big screen name.

The real reason that this is such a big deal is the way we interpret it: what is the “reading” the powers of our heroes? Marvel is doing its best to hide that this is how they see the character, but that might not be enough to stop the whole thing from turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy… or maybe it will end up being that all too true

The real reason that my team (including my partner, who just happened to be in town) managed such a resounding success seems to be an entirely different phenomenon: the fact that, from a Marvel Comics point of view, the person reading is me.

Yes, I could have done any of these things, and I mean ANY of those things, and I could have failed these readings, and I could have even read them wrongly, but there was something, somewhere, in my brain that told me that I could. So it’s a coincidence that it wasn’t my brain that was the problem, it was somebody else’s brain reading how I read.

But, of course, that doesn’t entirely explain why Marvel’s heroes seem to be able to read others’ minds… it could simply be that I’m good at this sort of thing. Or it could be that they’re all pretty good at it. Or it could be the result of their powers. Or, worst case scenario, it could just be me.

We’ll probably never know for sure what’s happening.
