“It’s a fun little trick!” says J.R. (or James) Reynolds, who is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of “The Vines”. “Most of the time. You need a little more skill and more finesse to do it. But telekinesis is a little bit of a gimmick, so it’s been around for a while.
“I can’t quite remember exactly when it first came into use. For some reason it was in the ’70s.
“It is probably true that telekineticism is a real thing.
“‘The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ by Bruce Dickinson,” quips Reynolds, referring to how in the movie “Danger (1981) a giant robot is put into hibernation to avoid a nuclear strike. I thought it was a great gag, except that I couldn’t make it work with a kinesis system in my chest.
“I found out I couldn’t do it, though, because I’m a musician. The whole thing blew over after two tracks.”
How did you know you couldn’t do it?
“I read a book that said telekinesis is the ability to send a signal through the universe like a telephone.
“I was born without telekinesis.”
How is he so bad at being a musician?
“I can’t play notes, but I know how to hit musical notes. I can play piano or violin, which is one of the things I can’t do.”
So what are his talents in life?
“I’m a producer. I make soundtracks.”
What kind?
“I’m very good at making rock music,” he explains. “I made the score of ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, and it was a hit. And I just did an album for Universal, ‘Dawn of the Dead’, and it came out on the same day as ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’, so that took a lot of my attention.”
Sounds like a lot of fun, but how do you know if your music is good?
“Well it seems to be something I enjoy and that’s why I make it. You can’t do a good score in a studio. One has to play it live.
“It’s a way you can experiment on yourself, without getting hurt while doing it.”
