That’s one of the things that inspired me when I started the project, and it’s not just any floating arm. We’ve made a model that is a floating hand that actually bends. The arms are made of a mix of aluminium and wood, with a rubber band and a flexible rubber band attached at the elbow.
How does it feel?
I’m really happy that I could actually make an animated arm and feel confident that it’d be a good addition to the game. It feels like I’m wearing a real arm and that makes for a really entertaining experience.
How long does it take to make the animation?
I’ve been working on it for about a month and a half, so I think there’s no real set way, but I’ve made enough progress that I’m confident that I’d be able to get the whole animation done in about 5-10 hours.
Can you tell us anything about the physics behind it?
I did try to give it a simple physics, but after a while you start thinking about all those little things that happen with a floating hand. For instance, when my arms are fully extended, they can just slide around, or when their rotation is too fast, they can snap – which you’ll see in the video!
Why is the animation still pretty slow?
The arm is only made for playing Mario Kart, so it’s pretty slow. We’ve been working on this for a long time, and we’ve got a decent idea of what we could do.
The whole thing is quite hard to find a good frame to animate!
Who has been playing the best for this development?
Everyone has really liked it so far! I’ve had quite a few people give me encouragement in trying to animate, which is really awesome.
Which one of these projects are you most excited about?
Probably Super Mario 3D World – I was really looking forward to doing that. I’ve been working on 3D art for about five years. I’m pretty sure I’d be able to make it, especially given my experience with 3D models.
