Can phones read minds? – Magic Show Tricks

One of the leading theories of the origins of consciousness is that the brain developed from an organ that read minds—something like a telepathic or telekinetic mindreading organ that can, for example, manipulate your emotions, or tell your brain the name of a friend you haven’t seen in years when she calls at home. We know, for example, that babies can read a human face within hours, and show it to their parents to help control their crying. Children’s brains aren’t yet mature enough to make these kinds of manipulations, but they are capable of creating new kinds of mental states and manipulating those states. We should expect that, like all children, they will learn to read minds.

It would be silly to believe all that, of course. Many researchers aren’t betting their reputations on the idea. But we have more direct evidence of the development of minds than many skeptics seem to realize. It turns out that while kids learn to speak through their heads, their brains are also developing a second sensory area, called the visual cortex. This area is much larger than the other parts of the brain, and it’s the one that tells the brain you are holding a certain object. The brain’s primary visual cortex is located near the surface, a few centimeters above the surface of the skull. It is the one that is activated when we see a human face or a cartoon or an animal in a movie, and it is responsible for all the basic kinds of visual information we experience—like color, size and speed of movement.

When baby brains grow up, they will start to lose this part of the visual cortex, and will have to learn to see objects in different ways. They don’t suddenly forget they even have a visual cortex, but they can’t use it anymore because of the changes in size and orientation. It’s now the visual cortex, after all, that’s responsible for how we see the world around us, and our memories will be lost if we have it lost as well.

But before babies can see, they have to learn something new as well. This is an important difference between children and adults, since our brains don’t quite work the same way until we’re adults.

The brain and its visual systems are also evolving very early. In fact, there are only two kinds of cells in the visual cortex: rods, which are sensitive to light, and cones, which are sensitive to color. If you turn a rod on, it makes
