With all of the hype surrounding the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics, you might be tempted to think of all of the amazing things that a day at the beach in Rio will do for your body. Unfortunately, the Rio Games are also known for one huge problem and that is the Zika virus.

Despite the fact that many things are a head scratcher to Olympic hopefuls going head to head with the world’s most famous Olympics, like how to find your seats in a plane or not let your toddler climb on your back, the risk of getting infected with Zika remains extremely low.

According to the CDC, there have only been 22 reported cases of Zika infections linked to the Games and the U.S. Health & Human Services has said that there is a 90 percent chance that all of those people who contracted Zika were infected through sexual contact or shared towels.

That said, the risk of spreading the disease still remains fairly low. Not only do athletes not carry the Zika virus, they are also faring well. According to the CDC’s latest statistics, 98 percent of Zika cases in the U.S. are among people who are not living in the United States. Still, that means, at least 99 percent of Zika cases that have been reported to the CDC are in people who were not born in the U.S.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t an effect on athletes from exposure to the virus. After all, it is not uncommon for athletes to develop some mosquito repellent after a day at the beach.

And if you think that’s the end of that, then consider this: While the risk of getting infected with Zika remains low, it still goes up to about 1 in 1,000 if you live in one of the states with a known mosquito-borne Zika epidemic, such as Florida, Texas, and California.

So there you have it: The risk of getting Zika in the Rio Games
