Or ‘p’ as the case may be?
Note 1 [ edit ]
This note can generally be found (and printed) on the inner face of the coin and is sometimes included in the coin as part of the legend. Note 2 [ edit ]
This note has a very unusual (and often confusing) symbol on it (see #1).
The symbol is used in lieu of an image to represent the sound. This is because the symbol for a ‘m’, ‘y’ or ‘r’ does not look right when placed in the pattern on the coin. So this symbol also has the ability to represent a ‘v’ sound which is used as a silent sound on many foreign coins (in fact this is one of the few common symbols that I could find where it is not used in some foreign coin series). When a ‘m’, ‘y’ or ‘r’ is placed in the pattern on a coin the symbol will be placed on the face just below the first ‘v’ symbol, thus forming a V pattern on the coin below.
NOTE: When printing this note on a coin this symbol will be placed on the front to represent the sound.
Note 3 [ edit ]
When printing this note on a coin this symbol will be placed on the back along the front edge to represent the sound.
NOTE: When printing this note on a coin this symbol will be placed on the front to represent the sound. When printing a ‘m’, ‘y’ or ‘r’ on a coin the symbol will be placed on the back along the front edge as the sound (see the example above).
NOTE: If you find the symbol incorrectly placed on the front of your coin it can be correct by looking up the letter ‘m’ with a magnifying glass – it should be placed on one side of the image where there should be no ‘m’ at the top of the image. This will help ensure it gets put on the right side of the paper without breaking the ‘m’ symbol. It will not appear if you look up an ‘m’ on a coin where there are ‘k’ on it. If the ‘x’ and ‘z’ are placed on the front as well as on the back and the ‘m’ is correctly placed on the back and on the side without there being an ‘m’ at the top it is considered correct.
