Pitch, or pitch class, is a fundamental tool in pitch selection in baseball: the choice of the pitch that the batter will throw, or the pitch that the batter will swing to. This is done by the batter and is called “pitch selection.”
The purpose of this guide is to give you as much information about how to use pitch selection in each of your pitchers’ innings. I’ve provided a number of examples below, but the focus will be on some of the more common pitches that we’ll use in our pitch selection:
Fastballs: Fastballs are used by hitters as their primary delivery to the ball, but we’ll go into more detail about what we’re looking at here later.

Changeups: Changeups are thrown by batters when they want to change speeds. You should expect to see a high percentage of changeups thrown by starters in the first two innings of a game.

Sliders: Sliders are thrown by batters to the outside, in a low-and-away fashion. Sliders are often the first type of pitch used by pitchers, but don’t be fooled, changeups are almost always thrown by hitters.

Sliders, Curveballs, and Change: Sliders, curveballs, and change should be the first two pitches you look for in your pitcher’s time frame. In today’s game, you must be very specific about what type of pitch you look for as a batter, but they’re all the same, and we can quickly come up with a number of other common uses for them.
