The reason that the liquid is in the tube is because the material is solid, but if you add air, the pressure drops and you’ll end up with a droplet of liquid instead of a liquid. Also, if you stick the tube with something in the middle, the weight of what’s in the middle (or whatever else the tube has) will cause the entire thing to turn liquid. A way to use the air as a filler in an object that would otherwise be just a tube that is filled with a liquid.
In the end I realized the answer was to get a tube that wasn’t filled with any liquid (even air), since otherwise you end up with a droplet of liquid when you try to put in air. But I guess you can use the same method to work with other liquids.
