The number of people who don’t learn to contralto is still very low. But it’s growing.
One study found that more than 40 percent of those who are diagnosed with Down syndrome can’t contralto. The “normal” contralto has more frequency options in its range of voice quality, but it also has to learn different vocal patterns and register changes every four or so years. The one-year delay is very hard to predict.
Other studies have discovered that just 6 to 7 percent of children who are diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders have “normal” contralto voices. That compares with about 60 percent for people not with spectrum disorders.
A couple of years ago, a group of researchers published a follow-up study in the Journal of Voice and Speech. They found that some 3 percent of children with ASD have “normal” contralto voices. But it’s clear that many more have this “unheard of” frequency range of “contralto.”
