Other high-rolling rappers, like Kanye West and Jay Z, are far better funded. But most, including Mr. West, are not.
In 2006, Mr. West made $10 million selling seven million copies of his albums, selling out stadiums and arenas and generating sales for Apple Music, which Mr. West co-founded. In 2012, it has already been reported that he received about $25 million in earnings.
Jay Z, who is worth an estimated $50 million, earned $14 million from 2012 through September, and $5 million in the three months ending that year. The only other rapper to net big money from albums, in 2012, was Drake, though his album was outsold by “The Carter V,” by Justin Timberlake, and by Beyoncé’s “Lemonade.”
In contrast, Mr. West’s “The Life of Pablo,” made up of 11 tracks, was outsold by “Adele’s 27,” of which he was the sole producer. The single has earned more than a billion streams.
Mr. West is far more likely to get paid in advance for his performances: As of June, he had spent about $12 million on advance payments for his concerts and the rest in royalties for his songs. That compares with about $100,000 for “Adele” and less than $1,000 for Beyoncé.
