It always baffles me. This is a tough one. Kanye West is a great name for a rapper, but not in the same way someone like Eminem is. There’s no rapper that does that. Not even Tupac Shakur did with his name. There are some good rappers that are really damn good, but they just don’t quite fit with the whole Kanye West thing; they don’t seem genuine. It’s hard to pick a single player. I would pick Tupac, but he was also an all-around great rapper. The best of the best.
I’m not going to go out on a limb with any of these picks; some of them might not make the list. I will say that my top five may not really reflect the real opinion of my fellow Hip Hop readers. But I want to give it a try.
5. Dr. Dre
If there was ever a man who should take the top slot, it should be Dr. Dre, no question. Dre is not only considered one of the greatest musicians of all time, but he’s a real badass artist who brings the heat to the game on a regular basis. And you just know that if Eminem takes that spot, people will love him too. This is only logical. So there’s no point in picking other artists.
4. Biggie Smalls
There’s no question that Biggie Smalls is one of the biggest Hip Hop artists of all time. His name alone gets you hooked. And as a result, he has become the standard for all artists that are associated with the genre. He is also one of the first artists to really challenge the format: instead of just trying to be popular, he wanted to be the best. A lot of people are surprised that he is on the list, but believe it or not, he’s in the same boat as Kanye West in every regard, aside a few tweaks. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that Smalls could be the second coming of Biggie. It’s also great that he’s one of the only rappers to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. So when people hear “Big” or “Gutter” on the microphone, they know this is Biggie. And that’s an awesome accomplishment.
