Newly released images from the National Security Agency (NSA) demonstrate that it has become an indispensable tool in the U.S. government’s “war against terrorism.”

The agency, which is known for its surveillance of foreign governments, has now provided information used by other agencies and the public in several cases.

A leaked “Global Intelligence file” released by WikiLeaks in August confirmed that the NSA gathers extensive information on world population movements, including information on how people move around to different parts of the world.

According to a 2010 document, the NSA had obtained nearly 1 billion email records from more than 50 banks, companies, and governments last year through “a number of programs with different components.”

A leaked document, titled International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), revealed that the U.S. government is in the process of updating the United Nation’s treaty banning the export of arms and technology to states that “manufacture, produce, possess, traffic, or transfer” them — in this case, Syria.

The United States is now the sixth nation to ratify the Arms Trade Treaty, which, among other things, bans all arms exports and prohibits arms trading between any country that has ratified the treaty and any country that does not.

According to a February report, the NSA has also been collecting large amounts of personal and communications data from Verizon. The company was the first to be affected by the spying program, which began in 2008 and remains one of the most controversial elements of the NSA’s surveillance program. Both Verizon and the NSA are now involved in a legal battle over the agency’s surveillance program, which the two companies claim violates their customers’ Fourth Amendment rights.

In early 2012, it was reported that the NSA was also collecting information on international mobile phone usage, though it is unclear what that information revealed or who else was targeted.

In the mid 1930s two American scientists, Robert Murphy and Alfred Wallace, decided that a new technique was needed in which they could study a group of brain cells in the living brain and see how different regions of the brain are connected to one another. They wanted to know how the process of learning was actually occurring in the brain – what was actually happening when a person is learning something with their eyes closed.

To do this they decided to place an electrode in the area of the brain which has the function of detecting a sound wave. They called this area the nucleus accumbens
