If you’re already an avid fan of classical music, such as me, then it’s a great time to start learning to play violin (or anywhere on this page for that matter) and you can get your hands on a free set of music lessons from Audubon Society. You’ll need to have an Internet connection, but the recordings will get you by for a while. If you want to focus on a more instrumental approach to violin playing that sounds more akin to orchestral pieces, this post is for you. There are also a number of great violin lessons that can be completed in as little as five minutes, so feel free to skip through it.
How can I find the right teachers?
Finding the right teacher can seem a daunting task. You’ll probably be able to find more or less the right teacher depending on the type of music they teach, their expertise, and where you live in the world. Fortunately, there are a number of resources online that allow you to do your research for yourself. To begin with, there’s an excellent site called Teachertutor.com that lists the current teachers of all majors with a large database of teachers in more than 300 countries.
Here are the key points to keep in mind when looking up the best teachers:
They have to teach it. No matter what the type of music, if you’re trying to learn to play something as an instrument, your teacher should have absolutely no problem teaching it! (However, there are a few exceptions to this. If you’re struggling with one kind of music, it may not be possible to have your teacher teach it to you at all.) If your teacher can’t help teach you to play music on the piano, they may not even be able to help you learn the violin. But as any student in music knows, there are many teachers who can help you understand music concepts even better on the violin.
The teacher’s music is not what you’re doing. It’s okay sometimes to listen to an instructional video but that’s not what you play in music, so the teacher will have a harder time trying to teach the concepts they want you to understand.
How are my teachers rated?
Most teachers can only be rated by their current students (they’re paid per class, just like any teacher in the world), however there are many sites that have ratings in the thousands.
I’d suggest using an independent online rating site like MusicScore.com and a number of ratings in
