I think about this a lot – especially when I’m teaching. There is no time to practice piano unless you’re playing the piano for hours on end, and then I say hours in an hour – so how many hours does that need to be played out, or for how long should you be practicing?
That varies wildly! Maybe every 3 months would be a good guideline for you, or maybe every 5 to 6 months would be ideal. But I think it’s fairly common to play some level of instrument every day, or play some level of instrument three months out.

I’m going to be honest – I’m not an expert in anything, but I do like to make certain adjustments and keep notes in my mind. In a lot of jazz, for example, you have to play chords to get notes out of a chord quickly, so you have to learn to just pick out chords and make notes, whereas in pop I might know chords, but I’ll make notes to figure out how to make those on my own. My way is to learn by trying different things out and see what works before I think like “I know a lot of chords because I’ve played lots of jazz in the past”. That’s the kind of thing I like to do, because it’ll show me what works and what doesn’t. It’s about being open-minded and doing different things with what you have, instead of repeating the same things over and over again.

The key to my learning process is to be open-minded and try different things and see what works and what doesn’t, and then experiment and see what you like, what you don’t like or what you think might interest you.
