In my experience, a good way to answer this is to know your individual needs. If you enjoy playing piano, then you could benefit from a short practice session three or four days a week. Don’t go off and try to get too many hours in the morning – or too many pianos playing – because that will just drain your energy. Try to find a time that is convenient for you. A day of piano practice that is five hours is actually too short for me. If I was a beginner, then I’d probably try to get up at around one that I thought was reasonable for me, so I’d say that one to an hour of piano practise will keep the energy high for hours.
Will a good practice session last me hours?
Some people have the idea that a good practice session lasts hours – or days. In my experience, a good practice session should last about 1.5-2 hours. An hour of practice is also enough to learn the basics to play on the piano (including scales and major and minor scales), and play the music. Playing on the piano will be a good time to practice reading the music – a skill that will be important in any future piano lessons that you take.
Does a piano practice session count as practice for my teacher?
You will need to pay a fee based on the amount of practise time you are providing. Depending on the duration of your practice, it may be possible for you to cover your teacher’s tuition fee (if you’re paying in full). If you want to reduce your teaching time, then it is probably best to use other forms of study; otherwise, it is not recommended.
I have a busy day/week, do I have to keep going to the piano, and if so can I skip practice?
This depends on the nature of your practice and your personal schedule. Your teacher or anyone you work with should help you plan your practice schedule to allow for the best learning environment possible.
There seems to be a huge amount of information about practicing piano. This can be confusing for beginners, and some of the information can sound overwhelming. Most music lessons will give you a guide to find your best music practice environment – just be sure that you know what you want to do.
