Two federal prosecutors will go to federal prison for their roles in a massive conspiracy to smuggle cocaine into the country, a move that ends with the first such conviction in decades for the most prominent of the defendants.

Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell, who headed the corruption unit at the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patrick Cone and David M. Fein and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian J. Sullivan will be sentenced in federal court on Tuesday. The four other defendants, who are white-collar criminals and government whistle blowers, will be sentenced in July.

The scheme had the dual purpose of flooding the nation’s prisons with cheap dope, then using a network of bribes, blackmail, and threats to entrap people with government ties in order to get them to agree to take part in major drug trafficking rings. The scheme also included illegal acts — for instance, a conspiracy to conceal the identity of a drug trafficker — that helped ensure lenient conditions for the defendants.
