On October 25, 2007, the Senate voted to pass Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell by a vote of 83-17. According to CBSNews.com, “it’s a move that’s been criticized as unconstitutional. Supporters said the law would protect gay troops from discrimination in the military — which, they argued, is a form of discrimination.” Today, more than 20 years later, the law has been overturned by President Obama and all but two of the 14 states, where it had previously been legal, have now repealed it. But in the words of Rep. Steve King (R-IA), “There’s no longer any kind of moral authority for that law.”

For the record, the military has long allowed gay, bisexual and transgender soldiers to serve in openly.

In 2009, two years after the repeal, Army officials began making it easier for service members to open up about their sexual orientation to commanders, including those in the armed forces who are gay, the Wall Street Journal reported that then-Chief of Staff of the Army General Raymond Odierno told the Journal, “I’m not going to say this openly but I think you all know the truth: We have a very large and loyal group, some of whom are gay, who want to serve and they want to do well. I’m certainly open to that.”

The military has been “transitioning to an environment where a large proportion of these folks are, in fact, going to serve openly,” General David Petraeus said at Pentagon in 2010
