Most people think that an assistant editor in Hollywood is paid $40,000 for the year. For an assistant editor, working year to year is not feasible. This translates into the need for assistants with skills in different areas, and this usually means that they don’t want to work full time. However, the job does take a lot of time, and the experience it takes to develop is worth it.

So how do you know if you’re a good fit for an assistant editor? For starters, I would suggest looking at the credits of the film. For TV, there is a lot to choose from, but most of them fall on the TV side of the editing world — it’s usually a small department, and the assistant editors have very little say in what they are doing. However, if you’re applying for an assistant editor position, make sure you’re up to speed on the whole process of making TV episodes, or there’s a danger of missing out on opportunities. If you don’t have a good idea of what to expect as an assistant editor, you may even lose out to some candidates that are well-qualified and who haven’t received as many credit notes. Don’t be afraid to ask for a credit in an assignment for a great idea you came up with on your own.
The final tip is to make sure that your cover letter is a good fit for an assistant editor position. If you feel that you’re not compatible with the project, don’t apply. It’s the job of the editor to pick the assistants they can work with, and in some cases, the assistant is the one who is better suited for the project. That said, there are exceptions. For instance, if you worked on a feature film that had a major ensemble cast, then being a co-writer with another writer or visual effects artist may make it worth it to give up a little bit of your control. This depends on your level of experience, as well as what the director wants from you. Of course, there are exceptions — some directors are more likely to want a director of a low budget film than a director who has done a lot of large budget films. But overall, it’s best to make sure that you’re right for the experience and experience level that suits your ability level.
