A filmmaker is a person who can capture what the eyes see. So a director is one who can take the eye and transform the eye into something that we see. This is what makes our eyes see. We get it and then make the eye do the rest.

So how do you make the eyes work together?

I start by putting the subject’s eye into some kind of light—a different kind of light…it doesn’t matter whether its a strobe light or a mirror light, a strobic light or a reflector. Whatever it is, I’m changing its wavelength. Then I’m changing the direction in which the eye moves. Then I’m changing the distance from the subject as the eye moves. Then I’m changing what I do with this image, and it’s very much my job to find the right way to make the eye move that way. And the way my eye works is to focus really hard on each frame and focus it very, very intensely, so everything makes sense. But because it becomes a subject, this is one of the things that becomes important.

Can you get away with using a wide aperture?

We are talking in the end of the film. We’re talking about the most important frame, we are doing the most important thing. I would definitely say if it was something that I could get away with, I would definitely be in favor of using that aperture. But I would say on a film that will last a long time, even though its going to be wide open, I would certainly want to stay within those parameters.

The focus on the human eye makes sense, because humans are not used to shooting with a larger aperture, which is normally what you would want to do on a film with a lot of depth of field, since you are concentrating on the eyes. But you have to remember: You are looking at the eyes so you do not know how many frames it will take to get to that point, and that’s why you have to know about your subject and what it is that you need in order to focus for that point.

That is the question I ask myself. And the answer is, it should be wide open, and there should be as much space between pixels as possible. If its wide open, its going to have as much space.
