What is a director’s cut of a film?

The director’s cut of a film is the finished cut. It’s the version of a film that has a director and producer who have read and approved the film.

Why do you think you should have a big budget on a film when other filmmakers have smaller budgets?

This was a challenging question to answer after I got my first paycheck, but it was important to be able to share that experience with people so we could learn from it. And I think that’s one of the ways, if you can make it as easy as possible for people to give you money, they have more of an incentive not to give you money.

What do you think the most important skill is for aspiring filmmakers?

This is a difficult question and one that I don’t really know the answer to.

One thing is you have to give filmmakers some freedom. And I don’t know if every day you have the time to do everything the way you want to do, but if you’re going to go for this, you need to understand the risks involved and how to make a really good film. If you make an indie film, it’s all on your own. If you’re making an indie movie and you want to do a feature, it’s not all that different. You need to find a way to get it made.

How do you get financing for a project?

One of the things that I think I had to learn the hardest on that movie is how to do budget. You have to start with a rough estimate or something and build it up.

I remember once in Austin, where there is an incredible film festival, they put our movie on the same night — so they have a big screen, and all the theaters were full. They put the film in their projection system and it was a big screen — but the theaters were empty. I’m like, “Is that what you want? We’re here, we’re making a film.”

I remember saying, “You know what? I want to run this movie and if that is what you’re going to give me, then I’m going to give you 10 percent of whatever money you want.” And they literally said, “OK. I give you the money today, I give you the money tomorrow.”

When I was young, I didn’t want to go to Hollywood.
