Well, it depends on the movie, but let’s say that it is something like $1,200,000 for a feature. A script is usually somewhere between $150,000 and $200,000.
The rest of it depends on marketing costs (advertising, marketing, marketing, packaging, distribution; etc.), distribution costs (shipping the film overseas; etc.), and even the director. A director makes $3,000-4,000 a day working. So a director can make $1,200,000 in a year.
Ofcourse, if you live near a major studio and they’re working on a movie, you could make about $10,000 a day for three months and be on your way (or you could hire an assistant who is working for free at the local bank).
How much does a director make?
There are a few different factors – one of the biggest is studio budgets. A studio will give you as much as you can pay them. If you’re lucky, you can get 10% to 15% to fill in the “production expenses.” Other than that, the studios want you to do it for what the studio gave them in the budget.
If a studio made a movie for $100,000, it has to be “wasted,” or at least be low end, since that’s what they want you to do for $100,000. Of course, you could make $100,000 with a budget as cheap as $50,000. A studio’s money makes you work harder for your money.
Once you get a budget approved by the studio, your director takes an extra 10%-15% off each day until the cost of the screenplay is about $400,000 to $500,000 – which is the “budget amount” you need in order to qualify for funding.
If the filmmaker has the money, and if they really want to make a movie, they will do whatever it takes to get that movie made. This is why we see so many directors getting millions of dollars (some get many millions if their project is very big and the studio is behind them on the budget).
In fact, a director could make as much as $1 million a year working. Not all of these people will become famous overnight, but they will definitely get their name out there and eventually find themselves making money.
