It depends; not everyone is a film director. A lot of filmmakers don’t like to earn a living, but they like to be able to put the film they made out there and maybe get people talking. You get to show what you’re made of.
For a lot of people, it’s a career to stay away from that.
It’s not so easy. One person can’t sustain a film. It may work for one person. So it depends on how they want to do it. A lot of filmmakers need to make more money. For the last few years, it’s been more about “get on your own dime so you can be your own director” and whatnot.
Some directors make less than $15,000 per film.
Some filmmaker’s film cost more than $10,000. They want to make sure that they have enough money to buy a house and all that. They’re not going to sit at a trailer day in and day out. In the U.S., I think the average salary is about $40,000 to $75,000 a year. That’s about where you’re going to be if you’re independent.
A lot of filmmakers want to make $40, and $150, if possible. I don’t think film festivals pay a cent for an independent movie.
Do you think filmmaking has a future in Hollywood?
It’s not dead; it’s just kind of a dying art form that you’re going to have to learn to do on your own. I think it’s only going to continue to get better and better, but it’s going to be extremely, extremely difficult to find people who will make a good enough living to do it.
Is there any filmmaker you’d like to see back, or a director you wish knew more about?
I’m actually not going to say any names, but the good ones I think are: Michael Apted, the guy who made Trainspotting, it was a really good film. He’s a friend of mine. He’s a really talented guy and a very good example of what I’m going to say. I think he’s just going to continue to learn and go back and change the world with those films.
And, I think David Cronenberg. I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people. I hope he does. If he does, that would be an absolutely remarkable thing.
