First, get your director’s license from the local film and music department in your city. Be prepared to spend months or years of preparation in preparation for that step. Second, you can either do a documentary, an independent documentary, or a short film from your own money, which is much easier than going to New York for financing and editing.
Doing it on your own money means you don’t have to worry about any sort of professional advice to get started, and you can focus on whatever it is that you want to do.
Another great way to get started with your own films is to find someone to do a video narration for you, or to do a piece on you if you are already well known as an artist or a subject of interest.
This can be very useful for getting the exposure that goes along with releasing your own films, just as it is for getting the recognition that films like yourself receive with awards, and for doing more of your own marketing and promotions.
Also, there are sites, like Filmmaker.com, that offer to pay you for your time. This is in addition to money that you get out of making your own films.
