I don’t. I know people who say it’s one of the best jobs in the world, but I don’t think it’s. It would not have paid for the things I’m doing. I’m just talking about the things I do. I don’t want to compare myself to someone who doesn’t work in the world of film, because I don’t. [Laughs.]
You’ve been nominated for an Academy Award. Tell me about it.
You know, the one thing I’m proudest of is that when I won it in 2014, I didn’t know if I would actually get nominated. But that hasn’t happened yet. I’ve won awards twice. I did that at Venice and I did that at Venice and then the most recent was at Atlanta. So it’s kind of been a process of watching it roll out. I never was really, “Oh, I’ve won. The academy knows who I am.”
I’m very happy to see that in 2017, because I’ve always thought I was pretty good. I thought that in 2013 with The Revenant, I was good. I thought that in 2014 with Steve Jobs, I was good. Then it just started to slowly sink in. Last year, I got Oscar nomination for that and I was just thrilled to get nominated. I always loved having the Academy as a reference to be recognized by my peers. I loved being on the red carpet, being nominated. I thought it was cool that my movie had an Oscar nomination—and that was good for me in some way.
There’s so much pressure on an actor to make sure they’re at the top of their game from now on when they’re working with people who have this reputation.
Yeah, I know. It’s just hard to take your foot off the gas when we’re doing big releases that can be so big for a year like Arrival. When you’re doing a movie with [the] level of expectations and the money involved, you realize that a lot of things in life are easier to take when people are at their peak. It’s just harder to go when you’re the kind of person who has to work with people whose career doesn’t look so great [though you’re happy].
So you don’t want to just let things pile up?
No, I don’t. It’s just hard for me to find myself in a situation where I’m not doing what I want to be doing and there’s no reason,
