What to get a kid who likes to draw? – Concept Car Sketches

One of the best ideas on the shelves is the very old and very cool Drawing of Magic: The Gathering cards by Chris Guggenheim. For starters, he’s been helping out in the office on art since I started at Wizards some 8 years ago. He has some amazing examples. They were in the top 500 decks from last June [link]. There were some nice, cool pictures of Jund and Affinity, but the cool thing is they all fit on one single card. That’s just really cool.

Where do you go to get some new books?

All books have some kind of card art, though I’m particularly interested in books with illustrations and some of the more specific cards. I love the art in Magic cards—it’s the kind of art that I wish I still had a job in. I think it’s a lot more fun.

Where can I find art books about Magic?

You can find them on Amazon or I think the most widely available is Wizards of the Coast’s Art and Magic books. There’s a really cool book of illustrations, and the artists work directly for the book.

Why all the attention to Magic’s cards?

I do all my own deck construction—that’s what I do for a living. I also really enjoy drawing them and I’d love for my fans to see more of it. I think Magic’s cards are part of what makes it so popular in some of our largest markets, and we want to do everything we can to make sure they’re around for as long as they are.

What’s your favorite part about making Magic cards?

The process. When I start, I don’t expect I will get any finished cards in a month. I usually just add the basics—land, creature, enchantment, or artifact.

What’s your favorite color?

I really enjoyed exploring all of the colors as part of the story of Magic. You feel the characters feel very much like their characters in real life. My favorite was the blue. It was really a delight to play a Magic card with that color.

What’s new or old in your collection?

Probably my favorite Magic card of all time is Liliana of the Veil. It just looks so cool, so it’s almost too personal to mention, but it is very much part of me. A really fun card to find is Vraska the Unseen.
