I drew it before I got fired, so I drew it so far ahead of the time that he would have known that I was going to get fired, and then I drew it as if I was going to keep my job when I got fired, but he wouldn’t. And just after what he did, I had to take it down and replace it with a symbol that, of course, he didn’t know was the symbol. And at the time, I didn’t know that the new symbol was supposed to reflect what was happening with Ford.
So I made a little drawing and then put it away, and I got to work on this new piece of art [with] all the new imagery with what I just had in mind. I went through my whole life with Ford. So I was ready to draw a Ford logo. I just got to a point where I wasn’t drawing anything at all. And, you know, it is what it is. But I didn’t have a moment to think that that’s what was going to happen.
Is it a little nerve-racking trying to keep the character and the world that you’ve come up with as a writer alive in your mind?
It is more nerve-racking than it is exciting because I know that I’m going to get fired. So there’s nothing to do with your work. It’s all so depressing and sad. I feel the opposite of excited. It really is a depressing day for me. But the fun thing for me is to be able to write this character and have people talking about him, and the excitement of it is just how well I kept the story going, as long as the characters kept walking the road.
I did it with the character of Jimmy, and he kept alluding to things that had happened to him in his life, and that’s a fantastic opportunity for writers. I’m looking forward to that, because every time I put him down, I’ve got one of these characters that is going to come back to talk about it. There’s going to be a lot of questions. And it is going to be fun.
If that character does come back, what does that mean for the character of Jimmy?
He’s going to find out what happened in his past and he’s going to take some kind of action. I’m going to leave it up to you how the whole thing is going to play out.
